About Breast Biopsy

When a mammogram, ultrasound, or MRI identifies an area that needs further evaluation, an image-guided biopsy provides the definitive diagnosis. UMIH’s breast radiologists perform stereotactic, ultrasound-guided, and MRI-guided biopsies using minimally invasive needle techniques with local anesthesia — no general anesthesia and no surgical incision.

When breast biopsy is used

  • Suspicious mass or calcifications on mammography
  • Ultrasound finding that requires tissue diagnosis
  • MRI-detected enhancement requiring pathology

Preparation: Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and blood thinners as directed by your physician. Wear a supportive bra to the appointment. Have a driver available.

Typical duration: The biopsy itself takes about 30–60 minutes.

Radiation: Not applicable.

Frequently asked questions about Breast Biopsy

Does a breast biopsy hurt?

Local anesthesia numbs the area. Most patients feel pressure but not pain during the procedure. Mild bruising and soreness for a few days afterward is typical.

When will I get my biopsy results?

Pathology results typically return within 1–3 business days. Your UMIH radiologist and your referring physician will discuss the results with you.

Will I have a scar?

The needle used leaves only a small nick that is closed with a bandage, not stitches. Scarring is minimal.
