Same-day and walk-in appointments are available at most locations (unless the study requires prior authorization or extensive prep). Referring physicians typically receive our specialty diagnostic reports within 24–48 hours of the exam.

About Mammogram

3D mammography (also called digital breast tomosynthesis, or DBT) takes multiple thin images of the breast that can be reviewed slice-by-slice, which improves cancer detection in dense breasts and reduces the rate of false-positive callbacks compared with 2D-only mammography. UMIH’s Breast Health Program pairs 3D mammography with computer-aided detection and fellowship-trained breast radiologists, and — where indicated — supplements screening with breast ultrasound or breast MRI.

When mammogram is used

  • Annual screening mammography for women 40+ (or earlier for high-risk)
  • Diagnostic evaluation of a breast lump, pain, or nipple discharge
  • Follow-up of a prior abnormal mammogram or ultrasound
  • Surveillance after breast cancer treatment

Preparation: Do not wear deodorant, powder, or lotion on the chest area on the day of your exam. Bring prior mammogram images if performed elsewhere.

Typical duration: Screening mammograms take about 20 minutes.
