Same-day and walk-in appointments are available at most locations (unless the study requires prior authorization or extensive prep). Referring physicians typically receive our specialty diagnostic reports within 24–48 hours of the exam.

About Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine differs from CT and MRI in that it images function, not just anatomy. A tracer is injected, swallowed, or inhaled, and a special gamma camera detects where the tracer accumulates. UMIH performs bone scans, thyroid uptake and scan, HIDA (hepatobiliary), MAG3 renal, and myocardial perfusion imaging.

Is nuclear medicine radiation dangerous?

The tracer dose is small and decays quickly. Drinking plenty of water after the exam helps flush the tracer from the body.

Can I be around others after my scan?

Yes for most tracers. For a few tracers (e.g., therapeutic doses) short-term precautions with young children or pregnant contacts are advised — you’ll be told before the exam.

Do I need to fast for a nuclear medicine scan?

It depends on the exam. HIDA and cardiac studies typically require fasting; bone scans do not.
