Same-day and walk-in appointments are available at most locations (unless the study requires prior authorization or extensive prep). Referring physicians typically receive our specialty diagnostic reports within 24–48 hours of the exam.

About Open MRI

Open MRI systems have a much wider, open architecture than traditional closed-bore MRIs, making the exam far more tolerable for patients who feel anxious in enclosed spaces, for pediatric patients, and for larger-body patients. UMIH’s open MRI is a high-field open system, meaning image quality remains diagnostic across brain, spine, joint, and soft-tissue imaging. No sedation is required for most patients.

  • Patients who are claustrophobic
  • Larger-body patients who do not fit a standard 60-cm bore
  • Pediatric patients who prefer an open design
  • Routine musculoskeletal and spine imaging
  • Patients who have been unable to complete a closed MRI

Preparation: Same as standard MRI — wear metal-free clothing, disclose implants, and follow fasting instructions if you were told the exam requires contrast.

Typical duration: Open MRI exams typically take 25 to 45 minutes.

Radiation: No ionizing radiation.

Is an Open MRI the same quality as a closed MRI?

UMIH’s open MRI is a high-field open system, so image quality is diagnostic for the vast majority of studies. Some very specialized studies still require a closed high-field or 3T scanner.

Do I need sedation for an Open MRI?

The great majority of patients — including those who are moderately claustrophobic — complete the exam without any sedation, thanks to the open design.

What is the weight limit for an Open MRI?

Open MRI scanners generally accommodate patients up to 500 lb. Ask when you schedule so we can confirm the exact limit for your location.
