Same-day and walk-in appointments are available at most locations (unless the study requires prior authorization or extensive prep). Referring physicians typically receive our specialty diagnostic reports within 24–48 hours of the exam.

About PET/CT

PET/CT uses a small dose of a radioactive glucose tracer (FDG) that is preferentially taken up by metabolically active cells such as many tumors. The PET portion shows where activity is elevated and the CT portion pinpoints the exact anatomic location. UMIH offers PET/CT for oncology staging and restaging, treatment response, cardiac viability, and select neurologic indications.

  • Cancer staging (lung, lymphoma, melanoma, head-and-neck, colorectal, breast, and more)
  • Post-treatment response and recurrence surveillance
  • Solitary pulmonary nodule characterization
  • Cardiac viability and select cardiac-sarcoid workup
  • Dementia and epilepsy imaging (specialty tracers)

Preparation: Fasting for 6 hours; no strenuous exercise for 24 hours; keep blood sugar under 200 mg/dL. Diabetics receive individualized instructions when the exam is scheduled.

Typical duration: Plan on 2–3 hours total: check-in, tracer injection, 60-minute uptake wait, and 20–30 minute scan.

Radiation: Uses low-dose ionizing radiation.

Frequently asked questions about PET/CT

Is a PET/CT scan safe?

Yes. The tracer decays quickly and the total radiation dose is comparable to other diagnostic imaging exams. Drink plenty of water after the scan to help clear the tracer.

Why do I have to fast before a PET/CT?

The tracer competes with glucose for uptake. Fasting keeps blood sugar low so the tracer concentrates in the target tissues rather than being diluted by circulating glucose.

How long does a PET/CT appointment take?

Total appointment time is 2–3 hours because of the required 60-minute uptake wait after the tracer injection.
