Same-day and walk-in appointments are available at most locations (unless the study requires prior authorization or extensive prep). Referring physicians typically receive our specialty diagnostic reports within 24–48 hours of the exam.

About Thyroid Biopsy

When a thyroid nodule meets sonographic criteria for biopsy (TI-RADS), UMIH performs an ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) with local anesthesia. The exam is minimally invasive, takes about 30 minutes, and provides the tissue needed to distinguish benign from malignant nodules.

When thyroid biopsy is used

  • Thyroid nodule flagged on ultrasound (TI-RADS 4 or 5)
  • Growing nodule under surveillance
  • Suspicious lymph node in the neck

Preparation: Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and blood thinners as directed by your physician. No fasting required for most patients.

Typical duration: The biopsy takes about 30 minutes.

Radiation: No ionizing radiation.
