A Bone Density or DEXA Exam is defined as a Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry scan is used to measure the density and mineral content in bone, usually in the hip or lower spine.
It is commonly ordered due to its accurate method of determining potential problems related to bone loss and potential for future fractures, also referred to as Osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis affects more women than men, usually in the post-menopausal stage of their life. However it may affect women and men due to certain other health conditions or medications.
There is no preparation, special injections or medications required for this 30 minute exam.
